Volunteer Service and Fundraising Efforts
Founded in 1971, to support the aims and objectives of the hospital, the
Auxiliary has supported East Jefferson General Hospital through volunteer
service and fundraising efforts ever since.
At its inception, this non-profit group was composed of community volunteers
dedicated to brightening the stays of East Jefferson General Hospital
patients by delivering books and magazines throughout the hospital.
Proceeds from the Auxiliary go towards community programs including education and healthcare. In fact, over the years the Auxiliary has furnished one of the first emergency trauma rooms, a room in the neonatal unit, and bought equipment for x-rays, bone scans, pediatrics, the PACU room (recovery room), the Wellness Center, and more.
Auxiliary support programs and events
Great Ladies and Great Gentleman Awards Luncheon
Since 1975, the Auxiliary has sponsored the Great Lady/Great Gentleman
Awards to honor eight exceptional volunteers in the Greater New Orleans
area. The luncheon is held annually at the Audubon Tea Room and includes
an auction, raffles and an awards presentation. Proceeds from the event
fund a nursing scholarship program, a continuing education and re-certification
program for nurses, and special hospital projects.
Nursing Scholarship Fund
The Auxiliary created the Nursing Scholarship Fund over 30 years ago. Since
then, it has awarded nearly 200 nurses the opportunity to alleviate some
of their education-related expenses through this scholarship.
The Nursing Scholarship is funded, primarily, through the annual Great
Ladies and Great Gentleman's Luncheon. Nurses who apply and qualify for
the scholarship receive $1,000 a semester to be used toward tuition, books,
supplies or living expenses.
In order to be considered eligible, applicants must be enrolled in nursing school and ready to begin the clinical portion of their schooling. The Auxiliary considers all eligible students regardless of whether they are striving toward their associates' or bachelors' degree in nursing.
Applications are located at the employment office of East Jefferson General Hospital; there is no fee to apply. After submitting an application, qualified students will participate in an interview process before a final award decision is made.
"This is a terrific alternative for anyone who needs help and would like a scholarship. Desire is the main requirement." - Auxiliary Member Beverly Watts
Continuing education program
This program was organized by the hospital's nursing administration to assist nurses in obtaining mandatory recertification. The Auxiliary raises funds for this endeavor.
Care-Ring
Care-Ring program volunteers make daily telephone calls to community members who are home bound, live alone, or are recuperating from surgery or illness.
Doctors' Day and Nurses' Day
The Auxiliary honors East Jefferson General Hospital doctors and nurses on their own special days for the dedication they show to the hospital and its patients all year long.

Annual and lifetime Auxiliary memberships are available to anyone who wishes to join. A one-year membership is $20. A lifetime membership is $250 and may be paid over the course of one year.
