Family Medicine Residency Program

Are you an enthusiastic and experienced family medicine physician? Join our ACGME accredited 6-6-6 Family Medicine Residency Program by applying online.

Welcome to Family Medicine

Welcome to the East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH) Family Medicine Residency Program in Metairie, Louisiana! Established in 1998, our program is ACGME-accredited without citation and welcomes 6 residents annually, creating a total complement of 18 residents. For over a decade, we have maintained a 100% pass rate on the American Board of Family Medicine certification examination, showcasing our commitment to excellence.

Situated in a suburb of New Orleans, our location offers a comfortable living experience with the benefits of a historic city just a few miles away. While most professional time is spent at our 335-bed hospital, residents also rotate in downtown New Orleans, experiencing the level-1 trauma center at University Medical Center and inpatient pediatrics at Children’s Hospital New Orleans.

Our residency program is located on the EJGH campus, a medical landmark that has provided high-quality, compassionate care for over 50 years. A key strength of our program is the proximity of our residency clinic to the hospital, ensuring convenient and consistent continuity of care. With a robust inpatient service dedicated to our clinic patients and an integrated EMR (Epic) for efficient patient tracking, our residents gain a comprehensive and immersive learning experience.

Recently integrated with Tulane Medical Center as the primary teaching hospital for Tulane University School of Medicine, EJGH offers a unique setting for learning. While we remain independent from Tulane, family medicine residents interact with their Tulane colleagues and benefit from expanded clinical services, specialty consultants, and academic opportunities unique to our partnership with Tulane. We continue to host both Tulane and LSU medical students in our residency clinic and our inpatient hospital service.

Our dedicated faculty and administrative staff, many of whom are program graduates, form the backbone of our program. Operating on a "resident first" philosophy, our faculty prioritizes resident education and regularly offers formative feedback and mentorship. On day one, you are assigned a faculty advisor to help guide you through your residency journey. Our administrative team works diligently to provide a comfortable and efficient learning environment.

Family Medicine is a rewarding specialty, and EJGH Family Medicine offers an exciting and collegial training atmosphere. We are seeking motivated residents with an innovative spirit, diligent work ethic, and intellectual curiosity. In short, we are looking for residents passionate about Family Medicine! In return, our residency program commits to fostering your intellectual curiosity while prioritizing your well-being.

We would love the opportunity to share our vision of Family Medicine and our program with you.

Sincerely,

Rade N. Pejic, M.D., M.M.M.

Program highlights

Tulane University Affiliation

Tulane University Our program is privileged to have a strong affiliation with Tulane University, providing access to an array of academic resources, including the Tulane Rudolph Matas medical library and their innovative simulation lab. As part of this collaboration, Tulane medical students join our clinic during their 3rd-year family medicine clerkship and contribute to inpatient rotations for their family medicine acting internship. This not only enriches their learning experience but also provides our residents with ample opportunities to take on teaching roles. Furthermore, Tulane faculty actively participate in our didactic lecture series and lead certain rotations. We also engage in collaborative research through the Tulane Southern Area Patient Oriented Research Organization (SAPORO), the sole practice-based research organization in the Gulf South.

Outpatient Training at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic

outpatient training centerOur clinic, a bustling hub with over 10,000 patient encounters annually, serves individuals of diverse ages, races, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Approximately 30% of our patient population is covered by Medicaid, 40% by Medicare, and 30% by private insurance. Residents in our clinic gain valuable experience in various office-based procedures, including cryotherapy, incision and drainage, excision of skin lesions, pap smears, IUD/Nexplanon insertion, joint injections, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

Inpatient training

inpatient training centerFor 10 months, residents immerse themselves in our inpatient medicine service, acquiring a robust education in hospital medicine. A unique aspect of our program is the continuity of care, as we admit each of our clinic patients and manage their hospitalization. Additionally, our residents cover the nursery providing routine newborn care.

Integrative medicine

While covering a broad range of topics, the curriculum places a special focus on nutrition, vitamins & supplements, and alternative pain treatment. Upon successful completion, residents receive a certificate from the University of Arizona.

Advocacy

Residents participate in annual events such as White Coat Day and serve as Family Physician of the Day at the Capitol during legislative sessions. Delegates from our program contribute to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians (LAFP).

Community service

Our residents provide clinical and educational support for several Tulane student-run clinics, including the Bridge House. Additionally, we collaborate with physicians and staff from the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine to conduct pre-participation physicals for high school athletes. Our residents actively support vaccine outreach programs and lead engaging community health discussions.

Program requirements

The EJGH Family Medicine Residency Program is a competitive opportunity for aspiring family medicine practitioners. We've outlined some key guidelines to ensure that our program attracts individuals who are poised for success.

ERAS/NRMP
All applicants must register through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for their application submission. We kindly request that applications be submitted exclusively through ERAS and not via mail, fax, or email. Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered. Interviews are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visas
Applicants must be either United States citizens or possess permanent residency at the time of application, as our program does not sponsor or accept any visas or work authorization documents.

Medical school
Graduation from an accredited medical school within the past three years is a minimum requirement for consideration. If medical school training was completed greater than one year prior to applying, it is mandatory that the applicant is engaged in a direct patient care experience during the year of application. Observerships and/or research experiences do not fulfill this requirement.

Letters of recommendation
We require a minimum of three letters of recommendation, with one specifically from a family medicine physician. These letters should highlight your clinical skills and bedside manner, as letters from non-clinicians will not be considered.

Licensure exams
Passing scores on USMLE Step 1 & 2 or COMLEX 1 & 2 exams is mandatory. Applications without passing scores will not be considered.

International Medical Graduates
International Medical Graduates must be able to obtain a valid ECFMG certification and a Louisiana intern permit by the start of residency training on July 1st. All applicants must be able to communicate effectively in English.

Experience
The EJGH Family Medicine Residency Program actively seeks highly motivated candidates who not only aim to successfully complete their training but also aspire to make a substantial impact on the residency and excel in their future careers. We are in search of individuals with a proven track record of academic excellence and a steadfast commitment to the field of family medicine. Your dedication and contributions will not only shape your professional journey but also enhance the overall dynamism of our competitive program.

Dwayne Whitfield“All resident physicians should be surrounded by supportive faculty and staff, have a focus on team camaraderie, have the opportunity and autonomy to learn to care for patients the way they want to, and have confidence and competence instilled in them at the end of those three years. East Jefferson did this without a doubt.”

- Dwayne Whitfield, MD – Class of 2020
