New Orleans, LA – “For Care. For Community. For You.” Those six words form the banner message on LCMC Health’s website. It is that message that drives the work of the thousands of individuals who work in a variety of capacities for LCMC Health and its members hospitals.
That spirit is at the heart of LCMC Health’s Human Resources (HR) department’s internal community giving program, through which the HR’s “office crashers” team selects a worthy organization to support, in this case a year-long partnership with Joseph S. Clark Preparatory High School, a member of the First Line Charter School family located in the Treme neighborhood. The support comes from the employees themselves.
In this case, upon learning that the school’s student population includes kids who struggle to get the supplies they need, including the basics – notebooks, pens, paper – and other items such as backpacks, uniform sweaters, even belts. What started out as a supply drive at the beginning of the calendar year grew into a much bigger and more generous effort, resulting in the HR department raising more than $2,000, which meant they were able to provide students with their basic needs. But the generosity did not stop there.
The HR team collected gifts for the holidays, such as coloring books, headphones andcollege apparel, that the Clark community used as incentives and as actual holiday presents. In some cases, HR team members donated their Rouse’s gift card, a holiday gift from the LCMC Health system, to the school community. Joseph Robertson, a member of the University Medical Center Human Resources team, joined in the effort, donating several suits to the school which is used in a work skills class taught at the school.
At the 2018 Commencement, the Clark school community surprised LCMC Health’s HR team, represented by Carey Faust, Learning & Organizational Development Consultant, honoring the system as a “distinguished guest” at the ceremony. After opening remarks, the school’s Principal, Margaret Leaf, recognized LCMC Health as an organization that has been a partner to Clark’s class of 2018 that has significantly impacted the quality of student life. As Faust recalls, Leaf stated, “Out of all the schools in the city that this organization could have chosen to sponsor, who would ever think they would choose us! They’ve provided us with sweaters, school uniforms, Christmas care packages, and more.”
“The friends and families of the graduates stood up and cheered for LCMC Health,” remembers Faust, adding “I honestly wish every single one of us could have attended because the appreciation and gratitude was tangible! It’s crazy how all us of donating a few dollars had a monumental impact on this school! They created the award specifically for us, naming it the Luke 6:31 Award, because what you ‘wish others would do to you, do so to them.’ ”
