Lifelong care and wellness for former NFL players

Every athlete gets personalized, coordinated care from the physicians and team at the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine. So it was no surprise when we were selected by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to provide medical evaluations and care for former NFL players as part of The Trust’s Brain and Body and Milestone Wellness assessment programs.

The Trust is a set of resources and programs designed to help former players succeed off the field and in life after football. Because health is the starting point for a successful transition, the Trust’s assessment programs focus on specific health needs and provide advanced care and management throughout each stage of life.

A game plan for life

Former NFL players face health challenges unique to their sport and lifestyle. The assessment programs give players the care they need with a focus on their comfort and convenience. We provide:

  • VIP services and treatment
  • Musculoskeletal and rehabilitation evaluation
  • Neurological evaluation
  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Neuropsychological evaluation
  • Speech language evaluation
  • Brain and skeletal imaging
  • Blood work
  • Consultation with a social worker
  • Transition and family counseling
  • Cardiology, urology and other evaluations and services as needed

Working for a healthier future

Reducing health risks for these elite athletes is a priority of the National Football League and related organizations, and we are a major player. Tulane University School of Medicine is the official screening partner for the NFL Player Care Foundation’s Healthy Body and Mind Screening Program, supported by the NFL Alumni Association to offer free medical evaluations and mental health resources to former NFL players. The screenings are offered as part of the NFL Player Care Foundation’s research programs, which help to advance public awareness and scientific understanding of health issues that affect former NFL players.
