Reconstructive Urology

We offer a world-class, multidisciplinary program in the repair and treatment of complex urologic complications and injuries that are the result of cancer surgery and treatments, surgical complications and issues, radiation therapy and urologic trauma. We also offer quality-of-life surgery and interventions to treat problems of urination, urinary control and sexual function.

Our specially trained urologic surgeons have expertise and extensive experience performing complex reconstructive surgery on the kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra and male genitals. We offer a multidisciplinary approach to care in partnership with colon and rectal surgeons, plastic surgeons, gynecologists, orthopedic surgeons and others.

Our reconstructive urology experts provide innovative solutions to conditions and health issues such as the following:

Urethral stricture

A urethral stricture is caused by scarring that narrows the tube that carries urine out of the body. This restriction of urine flow can cause medical problems in the urinary tract, including inflammation or infection. Treatment options can include catheterization, dilation, stent implantation or urethroplasty, in which the narrowed section of urethra is surgically removed and enlarged.

Male incontinence

The unintentional loss of urine can be the result of several conditions, including weak or damaged bladder muscles, overactive bladder muscles, certain prostate conditions and nerve damage. Depending on the cause, solutions can range from therapy and exercise to surgical solutions.

Bladder neck contracture

This rare condition - in which the group of muscles that connect the bladder to the urethra is constricted - sometimes occurs in men after prostate surgery. Treatment options can include dilation of the area in mild cases and minimally invasive surgical options in more severe cases.

Neurogenic bladder

This term can reference several different urinary conditions in which bladder control is lacking due to brain, spinal cord or nerve problems. While this condition cannot be cured, in most cases it can be managed through medication and intermittent catheterization. In some cases, the condition warrants significant reconstructive surgery.

Ureteral stricture

This obstruction of the ureter, or the tube that drains urine form the kidney to the bladder, can be a congenital or the result of scarring from previous surgeries, among other causes. Treatment for ureteral stricture can include surgical implantation of a stent to open the narrowed section, or minimally invasive robotic surgery to reconstruct the urinary tract.

Ureteropelvic junction obstruction

This condition occurs when part of the kidney is blocked, slowing or stopping the flow of urine and potentially causing damage to the kidney. Treatment options can include open surgery or, increasingly, new, minimally invasive surgical techniques.

This condition, also known as ED, occurs when a man has difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. One rare form of ED is Peyronie's disease, results in a bend in the penis than can make an erection painful. ED can have many causes, and may be a symptom of more serious health concerns, such as heart disease. Treatment options for ED and Peyronie's disease can range from medications to lifestyle changes to surgical options such as penile implants.

Our reconstructive urology program also offers expertise and solutions in the following areas:

Cancer survivorship

Especially following surgery or radiation treatment of genitourinary, colon and rectal, gynecologic and some other cancers, patients may experience urinary tract issues that include voiding dysfunction, incontinence or ureteral strictures. Our urologists work closely with caregivers at our Cancer Center to tailor a multidisciplinary plan to treat these effects.

Trauma and genitourinary trauma

Significant injury to the genitourinary organs occurs in up to 10% of all trauma cases. So we are prepared to take quick action to repair damage and preserve function when time is of the essence. We then follow our patient to ensure the best possible ongoing treatment of and recovery from traumatic injuries.

Transgender surgical care

We offer an expert, compassionate approach to surgical care for transsexual and non-binary patients. We are part of a multidisciplinary team that works to customize each experience with your specific goals and needs, from gender-affirming surgery to ongoing follow-up care.

Transitional urology

We work with patients born with congenital issues such as hypospadias, spina bifida, ano-rectal malformations, etc., who grow into adulthood and help transition from their pediatric urologist to an adult urologist.
