Help your New Orleans Community Practice Safer Habits

A Fitting Station is a place where parents and caregivers can learn how to safely transport children by using the appropriate child safety seat or vehicle safety belt correctly from a certified passenger safety technician. Federal funding supported personnel to become certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians in order to provide fitting station services to your community.

This free public safety service helps to lower injuries and fatalities from motor vehicle crashes. There is never be a fee associated with this service. (LHSC -OM-11)

The benefits of these programs include:

• Providing an invaluable service to the community and the agency
• Providing the necessary education to enforce the child passenger safety law
• Decreasing the number of injuries and fatalities and the associated economic, physical, and emotional burdens that surround crashes
• Reducing the risk of death by 71% for infants, 54% for toddlers, and reducing the need for hospitalization by 69% by teaching correct use and installation of child safety seats
• Decreasing your agency’s liability
• Developing agency-to-agency relationships
• Increasing your eligibility for grant funding

Our certified technicians encourage and enforce the use of adult seatbelt usage, because:

• Crashes are the number one cause of death for every age from 3 through 33.
• In 2015, there were 719 fatalities in Louisiana and 72,000 injuries as a result of motor vehicle crashes.
• Every day, an average of 3 children ages 12 and younger are killed and 405 are injured in motor vehicle crashes.
• Current Louisiana child passenger safety misuse rates are above 90%.
• Technicians can provide education to your staff and community.
• This is not an insoluble problem. Be a part of the solution. Save lives.

As a Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force (LPSTF) Fitting Station, you and your agency agree to:

• Select a day of the week and time that your agency will dedicate to child safety seat inspections
• Designate a Fitting Station Coordinator (CPS Technician) from your agency as the CPS Contact
• Have a certified CPS technician available during the appointed Fitting Station time frame
• Check a minimum of 8 child safety seats per month or 24 per quarter (Independent technicians are exempt from this requirement)
• Secure a safe environment to conduct you Fitting Station activities
• Forward all complete and correct child safety seat checker forms to Michael Toups by the 5^th of each month
• Attendance at CPS Regional meetings and annual statewide conference
• Establish quarterly contact with your Region’s LPSTF Coordinator
• Maintain technician technical competency and proper CSS installation
