Dr. Trey Dunbar named Tulane Health System’s chief medical officer

Dr. Trey Dunbar, Tulane University School of Medicine’s section chief of neonatology, will also serve as Tulane Health System’s chief medical officer starting July 24. While Dr. Dunbar will maintain his multiple roles within Tulane University School of Medicine, he will now also provide physician leadership and input into quality and safety initiatives at all three Tulane Health System campuses, which include Tulane Medical Center, Lakeside Hospital for Women and Children, and Lakeview Hospital .

Dr. Dunbar is already a proven leader within the health system’s quality efforts, as he also serves as the vice chair of patient safety and quality improvement for the school’s department of pediatrics. Additionally, he serves as the Elsie Schaefer Chair of Neonatology and as an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at the school.

An outstanding champion of patient safety and quality care, his experience includes serving as physician leader of Tulane University's Vermont Oxford Neonatal Quality Improvement collaborative team. Dr. Dunbar also works with the pediatric residency program to develop and implement a comprehensive and innovative quality and patient safety core curriculum. Dr. Dunbar is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both general pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine.

“Dr. Dunbar’s leadership at our Lakeside Hospital for Women and Children campus is one reason it was recently named one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals – and the only top teaching hospital in the state – by Leapfrog Group,” said Dr. William Lunn, Tulane Health System’s president and CEO. “I look forward to Dr. Dunbar further extending his patient safety and quality knowledge and expertise throughout Tulane Health System.”

After receiving his medical degree from Wake Forest University, Dr. Dunbar completed his pediatric residency at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville and his neonatology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He then earned a master’s of business administration from Louisiana State University's Ourso College of Business Administration.

“We have great opportunities within Tulane Health System,” Dr. Dunbar said. “Our mission starts with providing world-class patient care. As an academic institution, we have a responsibility to teach trainees how to provide exceptional healthcare and give them a foundation that will allow them to improve care wherever they may practice.

“So many members of our system’s care teams are innovators and exceed expectations in quality and safety on a daily basis. These examples should be shared across the system and beyond as models of how we all can strive for excellence in the services we provide.”
