“ If you are thinking about having weight-loss surgery, just make the first appointment. It's the first step to a healthier YOU!”

I have not struggled with my weight my whole life. I would say when I started college is when it all went downhill. I've tried many diets, and I would be very successful with them. But when I would stop said diet, the weight would pile back on, plus more. I have never had any medical problems, but I was considered morbidly obese. In January 2020, after seeing the fantastic results of several friends' experiences with weight-loss surgery, I made up my mind to do it for myself.

My husband and I and two small children have lived on the Northshore for the last six years after relocating from the Westbank. Since my husband works at Tulane, I felt very comfortable consulting with Dr. Shauna Levy. After meeting with Dr. Levy for three months and getting clearance from insurance, I had my surgery June 1 at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans.

The surgery went very well and I was in the hospital for less than 24 hours post-surgery. The team at Tulane has been very supportive and just as excited as the patients to see successes. They are the best cheerleaders! They are always ready to answer any questions and even respond via Facebook messenger.

I am currently 30 weeks post-op, and I am down 81.5 pounds. I am so close to my goal weight; I can see it. I feel SO good and am on my way to a healthier version of myself. The adjustment in my diet has been an easy transition for me. I have had a couple non-scale victories, such as being able to run again, walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded, sit down and cross my legs — and I can keep up with my two boys. My two boys have loved watching me "shrink", as they call it. My husband, friends and entire family have been my biggest supporters.

This surgery is a valuable tool, and I know I won't be putting that weight back on. If you are thinking about having weight-loss surgery, just make the first appointment. It's the first step to a healthier YOU!
