About Dr. Diaz Guzman Zavala
I’m proud to be part of LCMC Health and Tulane’s Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine as an associate professor and director of the Tulane Lung Center. My path in medicine has been driven by a simple mission — to bring advanced, compassionate care to patients with complex lung conditions.
I trained at the Cleveland Clinic, completing my Internal Medicine Residency and Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship with specialized focus in pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung diseases, and lung transplantation. From there, I served at the University of Kentucky as Associate Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship and as Medical Director for the Lung Transplant, Heart and Lung Transplant, and ECMO programs.
My journey continued at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where I led the Lung Transplant Program and helped build the Advanced Lung Disease and ECMO programs. Later, I partnered with Baptist Hospital in Pensacola to launch the first Medical ECMO program in Florida’s Panhandle, expanding access to lifesaving cardiopulmonary support for critically ill patients.
Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of teaching and mentoring as an adjunct associate professor with UAB and collaborating with the University of Florida to coordinate transplant care for patients in underserved and remote communities.
My clinical expertise centers on lung transplantation and extracorporeal life support (ECMO). Academically, I’m passionate about advancing the use of ECMO as a bridge to recovery or transplant, exploring artificial lung technologies, and improving equitable access to advanced therapies for all patients.
At Tulane and LCMC Health, I’m honored to lead a dedicated team committed to delivering innovative, high-quality care to patients with advanced lung disease — close to home and with the heart our community deserves.
My little something extra
