Mammography
Mammography is a specialized X-ray of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast cancer—even before symptoms appear. You may be referred for a mammogram as part of routine screening or to investigate specific concerns. Modern mammography uses low-dose radiation and produces high-quality images. Mammograms are a critical tool in the early detection of breast cancer and play a key role in improving outcomes.
Breast Biopsy
If a lump or abnormality is found on a mammogram or physical exam, your provider may recommend a breast biopsy. This procedure involves removing a small sample of breast tissue to examine for abnormal or cancerous cells. Guided by ultrasound or X-ray, the biopsy is performed with local anesthesia to numb the area. You may feel pressure, but the procedure is generally well tolerated.
Biopsies are performed to:
- Evaluate a palpable lump
- Investigate suspicious findings on imaging (like calcifications or a mass)
- Examine nipple changes or other abnormalities
Pelvic Ultrasound
A pelvic ultrasound is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves to produce images of the pelvic organs, including the uterus and ovaries. It helps diagnose various gynecological conditions.
There are two common methods:
- Transabdominal – the ultrasound probe is moved across your lower abdomen
- Transvaginal – a slender probe is gently inserted into the vagina for clearer images
Your doctor may recommend one or both approaches depending on your symptoms.
Pelvic ultrasound may be used to assess:
- Uterine abnormalities
- Fibroids, ovarian cysts, or pelvic masses
- Postmenopausal bleeding
- Infertility causes
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Ectopic pregnancy
Bone Densitometry (DEXA Scan)
Bone densitometry is a quick, noninvasive test used to measure bone mineral density (BMD). It helps detect early bone loss, diagnose osteoporosis, and evaluate your risk for fractures. The scan is typically performed on the spine, hip, forearm, or thigh. While standard X-rays can detect significant bone loss, bone densitometry detects subtle changes earlier—when treatment can be most effective.
Your results include:
- T-score – compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult
- Z-score – compares it to others your age, sex, and size
These scores help your provider assess fracture risk and recommend steps to improve or maintain bone health.
