Honoring Dr. Marideli Colón Scanlan, MD
Dr. Marideli Colón Scanlan to be honored with the Frank C. Di Vincenti, MD Community Leadership Award
The Frank C. Di Vincenti, MD Community Leadership Award is presented annually to recognize an individual for outstanding leadership, volunteerism, dedicated community engagement, and exemplary service at West Jefferson Medical Center.
The West Jefferson Hospital Foundation is proud to announce the 2025 recipient of this prestigious award: Dr. Marideli Colón Scanlan.
Dr. Scanlan joined the medical staff at West Jefferson Medical Center in 2012 and has since been a leading voice in endocrinology for the hospital. A Jo Ellen Smith Scholarship recipient, she attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine. After completing her internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at LSU and Ochsner, she opened her private practice on the Westbank in 2008—encouraged by none other than Dr. Frank Di Vincenti himself to bring her services to West Jefferson.
Within the hospital, Dr. Scanlan has been instrumental in advancing nurse and physician education in the rapidly evolving field of diabetes care. She has served on multiple committees and played a key role in establishing protocols that help maintain West Jefferson’s high standards of clinical excellence. At a time when endocrinology providers are in short supply, she has helped grow the department to include three physicians, two nurse practitioners, one physician assistant, a dietitian, and a dedicated clinic staff.
“If you know Dr. Scanlan, you know that her passion is her patients,” says Dr. Judy Kang-King of West Jefferson Medical Center. “She has a unique ability to form lasting bonds with them, ensuring they never feel alone in facing their health challenges. Some have managed chronic conditions with Dr. Scanlan for over 15 years, finding both encouragement and loving accountability at every visit. Others come to her with new diagnoses, looking to her for clarity and support. She truly embodies the slogan on all of our physician badges: ‘I care for you like family.’”
Dr. Scanlan, a graduate of LSU School of Medicine, has served on hospital committees and professional society boards throughout her career. However, her greatest passion lies in direct patient care and sharing her expertise. She is deeply involved in educational efforts—from presentations for nurses and colleagues to community outreach that includes teaching elementary students, Girl Scout troops, and senior citizen groups, as well as making appearances on local TV and radio.
She and her husband of 28 years, Timothy Scanlan, PhD, live on the Westbank. They are proud parents of two children and delighted grandparents of two grandchildren, whom they love to spoil.
The West Jefferson Hospital Foundation looks forward to honoring Dr. Scanlan at its annual West Jefferson Jubilee cocktail reception and fundraiser on October 24, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.
