Touro celebrates special milestone of 100 years of delivering babies

Yearlong campaign shares countless stories of babies born at iconic New Orleans hospital

New Orleans, LA – This year, New Orleans oldest hospital is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its Family Birthing Center. Touro, affectionately known as the place “Where Babies Come From,” has been delivering local babies for a century. The hospital is celebrating the milestone with a campaign centered around community and connections.

All yearlong, Touro is connecting to the hospital with the community through a series of ongoing initiatives that remind locals of its deeply rooted history in New Orleans with a special campaign “Where New Orleans Comes From.” The campaign features local personalities and everyday people sharing their personal ties to the hospital. This celebration builds on Touro’s continued efforts to make the community it serves healthier and stronger.

“For more than a century, Touro has been the vanguard of medical excellence in New Orleans, a unique facility that offers patients a trusted experience,” said Greg Feirn, CEO of LCMC Health. “100 years ago, Touro began delivering babies, and since then, the Family Birthing Center has become the heart and soul of the hospital. We are honored to continue that strong legacy and share such special moments with our community.”

Since the arrival of New Orleans’ first incubators in 1922, Touro has delivered generations of New Orleans babies. Throughout those years, the hospital has maintained its rich heritage while evolving to keep up with the times. Earlier this year, Touro received Birth Ready+ Designation from the Louisiana Department of Health and the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative. The hospital is also actively involved in a partnership with Babyscripts, a national organization aiming to directly address birth disparities in expecting mothers by offering a mobile app that provides resources and monitors blood pressure, weight tracking, and adherence to quality measures.

As the longest operating hospital in New Orleans, Touro celebrates its baby delivery milestone by honoring some of its most distinctive patients, including Jean Frank who is celebrating her 99th Birthday on May 8, one of the first generations of Touro babies delivered. Ms. Jean is a lifelong patient with deep generational ties including her father, Dr. Leo Hirsch, who served as Touro Board President, and her two adopted daughters that were both born at Touro.

“We are so excited to celebrate 100 years of delivering babies at Touro,” said Manny Linares, President and CEO of Touro. “It is always an honor when a patient trusts us with their care, especially when mothers choose Touro to begin or expand their families. For generations we’ve been the ‘place where babies come from’ and we look forward to continuing that legacy for our New Orleans community for years to come.”

Touro provides comprehensive care for moms and babies in a beautiful and peaceful setting featuring delivery suites, private post-partum recovery rooms, daily breastfeeding assistance with Certified Lactation Consultants, access to perinatal services, and more. The Family Birthing Center is staffed by specialty trained OB/GYNs, midwives, nurses, and patient care technicians working together to provide extraordinary care all patients.
