Community Health Needs Assessment

Identifying Needs and Crafting Solutions

University Medical Center New Orleans cares deeply about the health of our city and region. As part of this commitment, our team has worked collaboratively with local partners to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The goal of the process was to identify the health needs of the communities served by the hospital while developing a deeper understanding of community needs and identifying our community’s health priorities.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that nonprofit hospitals conduct CHNAs every three years. University Medical Center New Orleans collaborated with 15 hospitals and other community‐based organizations in the region to assess community health needs.

What we found

By assessing the needs of the New Orleans community, University Medical Center has been able to better understand what we can do to help our community.

Some issues we seek to improve include:

  • Access to health services – Many residents are in need of more affordable, accessible healthcare solutions.
  • Behavioral health and substance abuse – There needs to be more providers offering diverse services while coordinating with behavioral health, substance abuse, and primary care providers.
  • Resource awareness and health literacy – Residents need to better understand how to use and navigate the healthcare system. We want to help by making information and care more accessible.
  • Access to healthy options – By getting better access to healthy nutrition and activities, residents can stay on top of their health.
  • Behaviors that impact health – Even with the right information and accessible options, residents will not always make the healthiest choices.

By increasing awareness through outreach education, we are helping our community solve these concerns.
