Residency activities
Staffing
Resident staffing is comprised of two two-week blocks during the year and approximately every fourth weekend. Residents will be exposed to both clinical and operational settings within their staffing experience.
Formal Presentations
Two formal, evidence-based patient cases and two journal clubs will be prepared by the resident for presentation to pharmacy personnel. These will allow the resident to develop and refine formal presentation, literature identification, and literature evaluation skills.
Research Project
The resident will select a research project from a pre-submitted list of topics. With assistance from a research team, the resident will design and conduct a research project and compose a manuscript suitable for publication. This project will be presented at a local or regional conference.
Continuing Education
Under the guidance of a preceptor, residents will present an educational activity during a Louisiana Society of Health-System Pharmacists continuing education conference. The presentation will be a review of the literature surrounding a selected teaching point. The presentation will meet criteria for continuing education through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
Medication Use Evaluation
Each resident will identify and conduct a medication use evaluation aimed at optimizing ordering, dispensing, and/or administration of medications with the goal of improving patient safety and outcomes. Results will be presented to clinical pharmacists and at additional hospital committees, as appropriate.
Management and Medication Safety
The resident will gain experience in pharmacy administration at both an organizational and departmental level. Skills in project management, medication safety reporting, and departmental planning will be gained through participation in system-level and institutional committee meetings, review, and resolution of adverse event reporting, as well as advancement of clinical pharmacy services.
Teaching Responsibilities
UMCNO serves as a site for pharmacy APPE students from Xavier University of Louisiana and University of Louisiana Monroe. All residents are required to participate in student training conducted at UMCNO. The extent of their involvement will depend on their individual learning experience schedule and desire to participate in the preceptorship of pharmacy students. Additional teaching responsibilities during the residency year may be assigned by preceptors.
Teaching Certificate Program
Residents have the option to pursue a teaching certificate through the University of Connecticut’s online program. If they choose this option, residents must successfully complete the online program prior to the end of their residency year.
Conference Attendance
Residents will attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and LSHP Annual Meeting.
