NEW ORLEANS – University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC) is proudly celebrating its 10th anniversary this August, marking a decade of transformational care, community impact and medical excellence as the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. Since opening in 2015, UMC has provided high-quality, compassionate care to thousands of patients across Greater New Orleans and beyond, no matter their background, circumstances or ability to pay.
“Marking ten years of service is a powerful milestone, but for us, it’s also a tribute to the enduring Spirit of Charity,” said Tom Patrias, CEO of UMC. “UMC proudly carries that legacy forward, leading regional healthcare with hope, healing and equity. Our commitment remains clear – to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to every person who walks through our doors.”
10 Year History Delivering on a Promise
UMC is a true reflection of the city it serves – diverse, resilient and full of heart. It’s a place where world-class medicine meets a deeply rooted community. It is the only provider of inpatient behavioral health services in the region where no patient is turned away, continuing the promise of care for all. The hospital’s dedicated team of clinicians, caregivers and staff creates an environment that mirrors the vibrant culture of the community, embodying the spirit of service that defines New Orleans.
In partnership with LSU Health New Orleans and Tulane University School of Medicine, UMC has grown into a premier academic medical center, shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals while delivering cutting-edge treatment and trauma care. As the area’s only safety-net hospital, UMC remains a lifeline to thousands, advancing health equity and access every single day.
“As we celebrate University Medical Center’s 10th anniversary, we reflect on a decade of extraordinary impact on the health and well-being of our region,” said Greg Feirn, CEO of LCMC Health. “As one of LCMC Health’s two distinguished academic medical centers, UMC is more than a hospital – it’s a place where innovation, education and compassion come together to serve our community. It reinforces our mission to provide exceptional care with heart.”
Commemorative Celebration of Milestone
The hospital’s milestone celebration included the unveiling of commemorative artwork by renowned local artist Terrance Osborne, followed by a second-line parade and a festive courtyard event with visits from former patients, including a special performance by New Orleans rapper Choppa.
As part of the anniversary, UMC will also debut a new comprehensive marketing campaign beginning August 15, highlighting real patients and real hospital staff. The campaign features a heartfelt voiceover by beloved local musician Kermit Ruffins, who was born at Charity Hospital. His voice, full of soul and New Orleans pride, underscores the deep legacy that lives on through UMC.
Anniversary events and initiatives will continue throughout the year, including the upcoming Spirit of Charity Experience, a historical exhibition at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center that will open on Aug. 24. This immersive showcase will trace the journey from the days of Charity Hospital to the founding of UMC, through artifacts, photos and stories that capture the heart of healthcare in New Orleans.
The Future of Healthcare for the Region
This anniversary reflects more than a decade of lifesaving care – it honors a legacy that extends back to Charity Hospital, reaffirming UMC’s commitment to care for all. UMC continues to proudly carry on the mission of Charity by providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to all, regardless of their ability to pay. Much like Charity, which served as a vital safety net for the most vulnerable patients for over two centuries, UMC functions as a cornerstone of public health in the region, offering a Level 1 Trauma Center, comprehensive specialty care and extensive services to the community’s most vulnerable populations.
More than a celebration of the past, this anniversary marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. UMC is poised for a bright future – one where the hospital continues to lead in innovation, grow in service and care with meaningful purpose.
