Awards and Recognition
The UMC Burn Center, led by Dr. Jonathan Schoen and founded by Dr. Jeffrey Carter, was named the Burn Center of the Year by the American Burn Association (ABA). This prestigious national honor recognizes a single burn center annually for excellence in patient care, research, and education.
In addition, the UMC Burn Center achieved Beacon status from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, becoming one of only four units in Louisiana and seven burn centers nationally to receive this distinction.
Dr. Jeffrey Carter also earned top honors internationally, receiving the Best Oral Presentation Award at the Australian and New Zealand Burn Association conference. His presentation focused on autologous skin cell suspension, a groundbreaking technique to promote healing and re-pigmentation following burn injury.
-
Drs. Carter, Miles, and Schoen have delivered:
- 100+ regional lectures
- 20 national guest lectures
- 5 international presentations
In collaboration with Georgetown University and Orlando Health, LSUHSC faculty hosted Puerto Rico’s first Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) courses, training clinicians in preparation for hurricane season.
Dr. Victoria Miles was elected to:
- The Coalition for National Trauma
- The ABA Burn Scientific Advisory Council
She will help shape national burn research priorities and evidence-based clinical guidelines.
Dr. Jonathan Schoen was appointed Medical Director of the UMC Burn Center. One of the center’s earliest fellows, he now leads with a growing national reputation as a top-tier clinical educator and investigator.
Dr. Jeffrey Carter continues as Director of Trauma and Burn Services at UMC and was named the 58th President of the American Burn Association—only the second President from Louisiana and one of the youngest ever.
His ABA presidency will focus on:
- Expanding educational resources
- Launching a young investigators program
- Strengthening disaster preparedness and financial sustainability
UMC burn faculty continue to lead innovative, high-impact research:
-
Dr. Jonathan Schoen, Associate Professor of Surgery:
- Awarded a grant from LifeScience Plus to study a novel hemostatic dressing to reduce bleeding after burn surgery
- Received support from PolyNovo Medical and Avita Medical to evaluate a regenerative biologic template for burn and trauma wound reconstruction
-
Dr. Victoria Miles, Assistant Professor of Surgery:
- Awarded a grant by Avita Medical to study a synthetic epidermal substitute for burn injuries
-
Dr. Jeffrey Carter, Professor of Surgery:
- Served as Principal Investigator for a $30M award from the Biomedical Advanced Research Development Authority (BARDA) for a multicenter study using AI and multispectral imaging to improve burn triage and treatment
- Successfully led procurement of an additional $24M in BARDA funding for a study assessing the clinical impact of AI in burn wound diagnostics, incorporating day-one diagnostic tools, behavioral economics, and patient outcomes
- National Injury Resource Database (NIRD)- This is comprehensive database developed at LSUHSC incorporating verified and non-verified trauma and burn centers in the U.S. The database was developed after reviewing all fifty states’ department of health listings, the American Burn Association, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, and the American Hospital Association with basic descriptive fields including geography, size, and populations served (peds/adults). No other database incorporates both peds, adult, trauma, and burn making it a unique source for studying population health, disaster preparedness/response, and critical access issues for time-sensitive injury/illness.
- Burn Care Quality Program (BCQP)- We are analytic site with data use agreements with the American Burn Association permitting creative use of the national burn registry to explore treatment innovations, injury prevention opportunities, and prudent demographic trends.
- Numerous burn-specific national claims databases permit careful analysis of injury care including ICD-10 diagnosis, DRG admission, and CPT for treatment. The demographic and combined claims data permits us to analyze the impact of care innovations and identifying unmet needs in burn care.
