Lakeview regional medical center observes healthy lung month

Launches new podcast series, house calls

October is Healthy Lung Month, and amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, lung health has never been more important. A new podcast series created by Lakeview Hospital , a campus of Tulane Medical Center, kicks off with its first episode featuring conversations with three frontline hospital caregivers who will inspire you with stories of their real experiences, and a second episode dedicated to better lung health that will focus on helping people who suffer from asthma or COPD, as well as those who want to quit smoking.

More than 8 million people die each year as a result of tobacco use, and lung cancer is now the No. 1 most fatal cancer in the U.S. for both men and women. And people with underlying health conditions such as heart disease or lung disease, which can be exacerbated by smoking, are at a higher risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms.

“Now more than ever, we need to protect our lungs,” said John Blender, Lakeview Regional’s director of cardiopulmonary services. “It doesn’t matter if you give up cigarettes for four days or four years, your body benefits right away when smoking stops. We are here to get you started on your way to better health, and we’ll be with you each step of the way.”

Lakeview Regional offers one-on-one smoking cessation classes virtually or by phone, where counselors are available to provide patients with the tools and guidance needed to quit smoking permanently, utilizing a step-wise approach to ending addiction. For more information and to get connected to a counselor, please call 985.867.3898. Lakeview Regional also offers a lung cancer screening test that is covered by insurance for high-risk people.

Lakeview Regional’s House Calls podcast series will provide a relaxed, thoughtful and conversational way to share medical information to benefit the community as a whole. The topics will be presented in real-people terms with real-people guests. Listeners can subscribe to the podcast series on apps such as Spotify or iHeart Radio.
