The event takes place on Saturday, May 5, at Fontainebleau State Park, beginning at 8 a.m.

In addition to the event sponsorship, Lakeview Regional has 10 individual teams participating in this year’s event, as well as a Fitness Activity tent on site that day. Anyone is welcome to join a Lakeview Regional team by visiting the hospital fundraising page.

“I am so proud of our Lakeview team for participating in the Heart Walk and raising funds for this important cause,” said Bret Kolman, Lakeview Regional CEO. “And we’d love to have others the community join us.”

According to the American Heart Association’s 2018 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update, heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, with coronary heart disease accounting for one in seven deaths in the U.S. The statistics also show that approximately every 40 seconds, one American will have a heart attack. The AHA gauges the cardiovascular health of the nation by tracking seven key factors, including smoking habits, physical inactivity, nutrition, prevalence of obesity, cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure.

“While heart disease deaths have steadily declined over the decades, there is still more that we can do to improve our heart health,” said Dr. Frank Arena Arena. “Incorporating more exercise, not smoking, eating a healthier diet, and maintaining a healthy body mass index – all would have a significant impact of life expectancy, along with just making you feel better.”

American Heart Association research has shown 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease; improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels; help maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity; reduce the risk of osteoporosis, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes; and enhance mental well-being. Lakeview Regional, in collaboration with the AHA, recommends “10 Fun Way to Get Active,” including dancing while cleaning, playing tag, rock climbing or swimming at birthday parties, going on a family scavenger hunt or having a Bubble-Wrap dance party. Participants in the Heart Walk 2018 can stop by the Lakeview Regional fitness activity tent and enjoy an impromptu Bubble-Wrap dance party and pick up a copy of “10 Fun Way to Get Active.”
