Orthopedic & musculoskeletal cancer
Orthopedic oncology at University Medical Center
Orthopaedic oncology encompasses a broad scope of primary cancers and tumors of the bones, cartilage, and soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system. These include muscles, tendons, nerves, fat, blood vessels, and connective tissues in the arms and legs and pelvis. All of these cancers are called “sarcomas” and there are over 60 different types. All are considered rare. Surgery is the mainstay for treating most sarcomas, however an experienced multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and interventional radiologists is also essential.
