Lakeview Regional offers $150 3D mammograms throughout October

Lakeview Hospital , a campus of Tulane Medical Center, will offer its state-of-the-art 3D digital screening mammograms for $150 and bone density Dexa scans for $50 throughout the month of October. Each patient will receive a free pair of “sock it to cancer” socks in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"As the most technologically progressive hospital on the Northshore, Lakeview Regional is committed to the fight against breast cancer," said Timothy Rogers, director of radiology services. "We are the only facility on this side of the lake with the technology and staff to offer same-day results if a screening mammogram is abnormal. That peace of mind is worth it for all women, especially those with higher risk factors." Every mammogram and every bone density scan includes interpretation by a board-certified Lakeview Regional radiologist. A physician's order is required to schedule an appointment.

According to BreastCancer.org, the overall death rate from breast cancer decreased by 1% per year from 2013 to 2018. These decreases are attributed to earlier detection through screening and more advanced treatment options. Still, an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 49,290 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in 2021. Lakeview Regional's October mammography drive is intended to increase awareness of the importance of annual breast cancer screenings and prevention methods.

Lakeview Regional's 3D technology uses high-powered computing to convert digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers, or slices, building what is essentially a three-dimensional image. Instead of viewing the complexities of the breast tissue in a one-dimensional image, the radiologist can examine the tissue one millimeter at a time, seeing fine details otherwise not seen on a traditional mammogram.

Lakeview Regional is the only hospital on the Northshore to offer the Mozart Specimen Tomosynthesis System when breast cancer is diagnosed. This state-of-the-art system is used during the operative procedure and creates true 3D images of breast specimens in 1mm slices in a single operation. It allows the surgeon to ensure that all abnormal tissue is removed by accurately identifying positive margins. It also reduces the likelihood of unnecessarily excising healthy breast tissue.

The bone density scan measures the thickness and density of bones, providing the radiologist with a quick and painless test used to detect osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition that affects women after menopause. Dexa testing is recommended for post-menopausal women, those with a personal or maternal history of hip fracture, those taking certain medications known to cause bone loss (including corticosteroids and anti-seizure medications), or patients with type 1 diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, or thyroid or parathyroid conditions.
