Bladder leakage, or
incontinence, can occur when the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of your body
from the bladder, is not functioning properly. Men suffering from bladder
control issues can now find a permanent solution for this health condition,
and it’s called the Male Urethral Sling.
How it works
The male sling is a synthetic mesh-like surgical tape, and during an outpatient
procedure, the tape is placed in the area of the urethra that is causing
a problem. This allows the urethra to move into a new position, allowing
a patient more control over their bladder and reducing bladder leaks or
incontinence.
Procedure
Though minimally invasive, the sling procedure may require a patient to
undergo other medical tests before surgery. Your doctor may order:
A urodynamic study to evaluate urinary tract function
A 24-hour pad test identifying the number of pads used and the amount of
urine leaked
A cystoscopy, or a test to view the inside of your bladder
Your doctor may also request blood tests, urine tests, and an electrocardiogram
(EKG) to review your overall health.
A majority of men who undergo this procedure are either cured or show signs
of marked improvement.
