Welcome from the Program Director

Program Director Thank you for your interest in the East Jefferson General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program.

As Program Director, I’m proud to lead a program that truly embodies the values of community-based care, academic rigor, and a deeply supportive learning environment. Our mission is to train well-rounded, compassionate, and competent family physicians who are fully prepared to step confidently into independent practice—whether that be in primary care, hospital medicine, urgent care, academic medicine, or further fellowship training.

Our program is uniquely situated within a dynamic healthcare system, providing residents with hands-on, family medicine training in a community setting, while benefiting from the academic affiliation and resources of Tulane University School of Medicine. This collaboration allows our residents access to academic enrichment, research opportunities, and a strong foundation in evidence-based medicine.

One of the greatest strengths of our program is the culture we’ve built. Residents are not only colleagues—they are collaborators, mentors, and friends. The camaraderie between co-residents and faculty fosters a team-based atmosphere where learning is personalized, questions are encouraged, and every trainee is supported. Faculty are accessible and invested in each resident’s growth, both personally and professionally. We pride ourselves on knowing each of our residents well and tailoring mentorship to help each one thrive.

I have had the privilege of serving as faculty and in program leadership since my graduation from this residency program. While there have been some changes over the years, the camaraderie and culture within our program has remained constant.

Our residents care for a diverse patient population and gain strong experience in outpatient continuity care, inpatient medicine, emergency care, pediatrics, women’s health, geriatrics, and more. By graduation, they are confident in their skills and adaptable to a variety of clinical settings.

We understand that choosing a residency program is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your career. At East Jefferson, we offer not just exceptional clinical training, but a warm and inclusive environment where you will be challenged, supported, and inspired.

We invite you to explore our program further and consider joining our family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions—we’d love to hear from you.

Warm regards,

Amy Galiano, MD

Program highlights

Tulane University Affiliation

Tulane University Our program is privileged to have a strong affiliation with Tulane University, providing access to an array of academic resources, including the Tulane Rudolph Matas medical library and their innovative simulation lab. As part of this collaboration, Tulane medical students join our clinic during their 3rd-year family medicine clerkship and contribute to inpatient rotations for their family medicine acting internship. This not only enriches their learning experience but also provides our residents with ample opportunities to take on teaching roles. Furthermore, Tulane faculty actively participate in our didactic lecture series and lead certain rotations. We also engage in collaborative research through the Tulane Southern Area Patient Oriented Research Organization (SAPORO), the sole practice-based research organization in the Gulf South.

Outpatient Training at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic

outpatient training centerOur clinic, a bustling hub with over 10,000 patient encounters annually, serves individuals of diverse ages, races, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Approximately 30% of our patient population is covered by Medicaid, 40% by Medicare, and 30% by private insurance. Residents in our clinic gain valuable experience in various office-based procedures, including cryotherapy, incision and drainage, excision of skin lesions, pap smears, IUD/Nexplanon insertion, joint injections, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

Inpatient training

inpatient training centerFor 10 months, residents immerse themselves in our inpatient medicine service, acquiring a robust education in hospital medicine. A unique aspect of our program is the continuity of care, as we admit each of our clinic patients and manage their hospitalization. Additionally, our residents cover the nursery providing routine newborn care.

Integrative medicine

While covering a broad range of topics, the curriculum places a special focus on nutrition, vitamins & supplements, and alternative pain treatment. Upon successful completion, residents receive a certificate from the University of Arizona.

Advocacy

Residents participate in annual events such as White Coat Day and serve as Family Physician of the Day at the Capitol during legislative sessions. Delegates from our program contribute to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians (LAFP).

Community service

Our residents provide clinical and educational support for several Tulane student-run clinics, including the Bridge House. Additionally, we collaborate with physicians and staff from the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine to conduct pre-participation physicals for high school athletes. Our residents actively support vaccine outreach programs and lead engaging community health discussions.

Program requirements

The EJGH Family Medicine Residency Program is a competitive opportunity for aspiring family medicine practitioners. We've outlined some key guidelines to ensure that our program attracts individuals who are poised for success.

ERAS/NRMP
All applicants must register through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for their application submission. We kindly request that applications be submitted exclusively through ERAS and not via mail, fax, or email. Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered. Interviews are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visas
Applicants must be either United States citizens or possess permanent residency at the time of application, as our program does not sponsor or accept any visas or work authorization documents.

Medical school
Graduation from an accredited medical school within the past three years is a minimum requirement for consideration. If medical school training was completed greater than one year prior to applying, it is mandatory that the applicant is engaged in a direct patient care experience during the year of application. Observerships and/or research experiences do not fulfill this requirement.

Letters of recommendation
We require a minimum of three letters of recommendation, with one specifically from a family medicine physician. These letters should highlight your clinical skills and bedside manner, as letters from non-clinicians will not be considered.

Licensure exams
Passing scores on USMLE Step 1 & 2 or COMLEX 1 & 2 exams is mandatory. Applications without passing scores will not be considered.

International Medical Graduates
International Medical Graduates must be able to obtain a valid ECFMG certification and a Louisiana intern permit by the start of residency training on July 1st. All applicants must be able to communicate effectively in English.

Experience
The EJGH Family Medicine Residency Program actively seeks highly motivated candidates who not only aim to successfully complete their training but also aspire to make a substantial impact on the residency and excel in their future careers. We are in search of individuals with a proven track record of academic excellence and a steadfast commitment to the field of family medicine. Your dedication and contributions will not only shape your professional journey but also enhance the overall dynamism of our competitive program.
