The Gynecologic Oncology service at University Medical Center specializes in the care of gynecologic cancers- cancers of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva. We offer specialized services focused on the prevention, treatment, and survivorship from gynecologic malignancies. We perform advanced cancer surgeries, minimally invasive procedures, and administer systemic therapies. We have a track record of enrolling on high quality cancer trials. With you at the center of our treatment approach, we work closely with other experts to develop a comprehensive, compassionate and cutting edge treatment plan that meets your goals.

Conditions we treat and manage

Malignant conditions
  • Cervical cancer is a cancer that develops in the lowest part of the uterus called the cervix. It is preventable with the HPV vaccine and screening tests like pap smears.
  • Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer and arises in the lining of the womb.
  • Fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer start in the fallopian tube and on the lining of the abdomen. It is very similar to and treated in a similar fashion to epithelial ovarian cancer.
  • Gestational trophoblastic disease is a rare condition that develops from trophoblastic tissues, which are tissues that support a pregnancy.
  • Ovarian cancer starts on the ovaries and consists of three general types – epithelial, germ cell and stromal.
  • Uterine sarcoma starts in the connective tissues of the womb.
  • Vaginal cancer is rare and starts in the vagina. The most common types are squamous cell. It shares many characteristics with cervical cancer.
  • Vulvar cancer occurs on the external parts of the female genitalia and the most common type is squamous cell carcinoma followed by melanoma.
Precancerous conditions
  • Cervical dysplasia is a precancerous condition of the cervix and without treatment can give rise to cervical cancer.
  • Complex Ovarian Masses and Borderline Tumors often have potential to be or become malignant. We can offer expertise in management of these conditions.
  • Endometrial hyperplasia or intraepithelial neoplasia develop in the lining of the womb and can harbor or progress to endometrial cancer.
  • Genetic or Familial Cancer syndromes such as BRCA1, BRCA2, Lynch syndrome and others can be managed. We offer expertise in strategies to prevent cancer in patients at risk.
