About Dr. Savoie, III

I went into medicine because I wanted to help people when they were ill. My Uncle Jon, a dedicated family physician, was always available to his patients, and I admired that deeply. When I was fortunate enough to be accepted into medical school, my plan was to join him in family practice.

Back then, as an LSU medical student, you rotated through orthopedics as a junior. I was lucky to spend a few weeks with Drs. Bob D’Ambrosia and Bob Chuinard, along with resident Dickie Robichaux. It was hard work, but I truly enjoyed it. One Saturday morning, by chance, I sat in on an extraordinary conference in the basement of old Charity Hospital. Dr. Don Faust was presenting a case to a remarkable group of physicians who were fully engaged, asking questions, teaching, and clearly enjoying what they were doing. I remember thinking, I want to do that.

Though I didn’t go on to specialize in hand surgery, I’ve found great satisfaction focusing on the shoulder and elbow. Patients can count on me because I treat every individual the way I’d want a family member to be treated—with respect, compassion, and a genuine commitment to understanding their story. I always take the time to listen, asking: What is it you can no longer do because of this problem—and how can I help you get back to doing it?

Over the years, I’ve served in multiple leadership roles, including President of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (2023), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (2010), the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (2016), and the Louisiana Orthopedic Association (2016).
