About Dr. Borgi
I earned my medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 2004. I completed three years of General Surgery training at AUB Medical Center, followed by five years of General Surgery residency at the Henry Ford Hospital/Wayne State University program. I then pursued a Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.
After fellowship, I was recruited back to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where I built a busy and complex adult cardiothoracic surgery practice. During my time there, I helped expand the cardiothoracic transplant program and developed a strong regional referral base for complex aortic surgery. In 2014, I performed the first combined heart–liver transplant in the metro Detroit area.
In 2018, I returned to Lebanon, where I performed the country’s first double lung transplant and first pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), and helped establish a surgical program for patients with end-stage lung disease at the American University of Beirut.
In 2021, I joined Montefiore Medical Center in New York as Associate Surgical Director for Advanced Pulmonary Failure and Lung Transplantation. There, I played a key role in expanding the lung transplant program and launched a dedicated surgical program for the treatment of CTEPH. I was also deeply involved in Montefiore’s nationally recognized advanced heart failure program, providing a full spectrum of surgical therapies—from temporary mechanical circulatory support to ventricular assist devices and heart transplantation. In 2022, I performed the world’s first HIV-positive–to–HIV-positive heart transplant.
I joined Tulane University School of Medicine and care for patients at East Jefferson General Hospital, part of LCMC Health. My practice spans the full range of cardiothoracic surgery, with a focus on advanced cardiac and pulmonary care, including heart and lung transplantation, ventricular assist device implantation, mechanical circulatory support, and surgery for chronic thromboembolic disease. I have a particular interest in aortic and mitral valve repair and complex aortic reconstruction.
I am actively involved in clinical research and have presented at national and international meetings. I have authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters focused on outcomes research, ventricular assist devices, and surgical treatment of end-stage heart and lung disease. I am board-certified in both General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
