About Dr. Ferdinand
I chose medicine—and cardiology in particular—because of the profound impact heart health has on patients, families, and communities. Growing up in New Orleans, I saw firsthand the burden of cardiovascular disease, especially in underserved populations, and I knew I wanted to combine my love of science with a commitment to making a tangible difference. Over the past 40 years, my career has included clinical work, research, and teaching at Xavier University, LSU, Baylor College of Medicine, and Emory University before returning home to New Orleans, where I now serve as Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Tulane University Heart and Vascular Institute.
Throughout my career, I have remained dedicated to advancing evidence-based, patient-centered care, with a focus on cardiac risk factor evaluation and control, particularly hypertension and hyperlipidemia in minority communities. Patients can count on me because I believe in treating every individual with respect, compassion, and a shared decision-making approach. My national and international work in cardiology has allowed me to access the best science and collaborate with colleagues worldwide, while my service with organizations such as the Association of Black Cardiologists, the American Society of Hypertension, and the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention reflects my deep commitment to public health and equity.
I have authored more than 100 manuscripts, presented widely, and remain actively engaged in nonprofit and community initiatives to improve outcomes for those most at risk. My passion for medicine is fueled not only by science, but also by service—and by the belief that every patient deserves extraordinary, compassionate care.
