Orthopedic surgery for your joints

When you choose LCMC Health for orthopedic care, our specialists focus on finding solutions that work for you. If more conservative treatments like physical therapy and medication haven’t improved your condition, we can help you decide if surgery is the best approach.

We offer a range of advanced procedures that help patients of all ages reduce pain, improve mobility, and get back to daily life. When possible, we use minimally invasive approaches. That means smaller incisions for a faster recovery.

If you decide on surgery, your orthopedic surgeon and care team are with you at every step. First, you’ll receive pre-surgery education, so you know what to expect before, during, and after your procedure. And soon after surgery, you’ll begin rehab, where therapists help you recover quickly.

Knee replacement surgery
Knee replacement surgery has helped adults of all activity levels overcome debilitating knee pain. During the procedure, your surgeon replaces all (called total replacement) or part (called partial replacement) of the knee joint with strong, artificial materials. At LCMC Health, our orthopedic surgeons use advanced techniques and technologies to make sure your new joint works for you. Your knee replacement may involve the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery, which helps our surgeons be more precise and improves how long the new implant lasts.
Hip replacement surgery
Like knee replacement surgery, hip replacement surgery helps replace all or part of your hip joint, which can deteriorate over time. At LCMC Health, we often use the innovative anterior approach to hip replacement. With this approach, surgeons can replace your hip joint and insert an implant without cutting major muscles, allowing for faster recovery.
Back and spine surgery
Back pain is one of the most common complaints among all Americans. We get it—a sore back or pulled muscle can make it hard to do even the simplest tasks. Our spine surgeons offer a range of therapies, including spinal fusion, to treat many painful conditions. We also focus on stress and other emotional issues that can cause back pain or make it worse.
Sports injuries
When you’re an athlete, it’s important to protect your body. Through sports medicine, our doctors, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other specialists work together to prevent injury and get you back in the game as safely and quickly as possible if you get hurt. From sprains and strains to pulled muscles and fractures—our goal is to keep you safe, fit, and performing at your best.

Learn more about orthopedics

What does an orthopedic doctor treat?
An orthopedic doctor treats injuries that affect movement of the bones, muscles and related tissues—also called the musculoskeletal system. They treat both children and adults and offer surgical and non-surgical treatments.
When should I see an orthopedist?
You should see an orthopedist if you have ongoing discomfort or pain that interferes with movement. Examples include:
  • Grinding, popping, or stiffness of joints when you move
  • Inflammation or swelling
  • Injuries, including sprained ankles, torn ligaments, or possible fractures
  • Joint or muscle pain that doesn’t go away
  • Limited motion that affects daily activities
Do I need a referral for orthopedics at LCMC Health?
No, you don’t need a referral to see an orthopedist at LCMC Health . New orthopedic patients can schedule an appointment online. Existing patients can schedule an appointment online in MyChart.
Will I receive surgery if I see an orthopedist?
You won’t always have surgery if you see an orthopedist. In fact, we usually start with treatments that are easiest on you. Think physical therapy, medications, injections, or modifications to your routine. If these approaches don’t help with pain and mobility, we can discuss surgery as a potential option.
Is orthopedics the same as sports medicine?

No, orthopedics is not the same as sports medicine, but they do overlap. Orthopedists often see a wide range of patients—from people with arthritis and carpal tunnel to those in need of joint and knee replacements. Sports medicine specialists focus on injuries related to physical activity, such as muscle tears, sprains and concussions.

Orthopedic care offers surgical treatment as a treatment option, while sports medicine tends to focus on prevention and physical therapy. A sports medicine clinic may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon when needed.

What technology do orthopedic surgeons use?
Orthopedic surgeons use advanced technology at LCMC Health to make accurate diagnoses and perform minimally invasive procedures. Examples include:
  • 3D printing: With 3D printing, orthopedists can customize instruments, implants, and devices to you.
  • Augmented reality: Augmented reality can help orthopedic surgeons see a real-time display of your joints, offering helpful visual guidance. This technology is especially useful for training.
  • Cartilage regeneration: There are different cartilage regeneration procedures that can help your body restore and replace damaged cartilage.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery: This technology helps our surgeons be more precise and accurate during joint replacement surgery.
What are advanced knee and hip replacements?
Advanced knee and hip replacements use robotic-assisted joint replacement technology. This technology allows your surgeon to tailor your surgery to you, instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach. They can produce a 3D model of your joint to ensure your new implant fits exactly. During the surgery, your surgeon uses a robotic arm to direct surgical tools, which is more precise and accurate.
