Cardiac rehabilitation recovery

Heart care doesn't end with a procedure or surgery. Cardiac rehabilitation, in varying degrees of intensity, is crucial to a full recovery. And while it doesn’t change your past, it can improve your heart’s future. Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program designed to improve your cardiovascular health if you have experienced a heart attack, heart failure, angioplasty or heart surgery.

Our cardiac rehab program is the first of its kind in our region, with accreditation from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Each phase of the program incorporates education, exercise therapy, and psychosocial support with access to a care team that includes:

  • Clinical exercise physiologists
  • Physicians
  • Specialized nurses
  • Registred dieticians
  • Social service providers

Most patients see success when they make a strong commitment to the program and attend regular sessions. Participation helps you make positive lifestyle changes, increase physical endurance, and handle stress for improved health.

Once patients return home, rehab may continue. Our outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program is a supervised approach where the patient's blood pressure, heart rate, and rhythm are monitored while they exercise. Physicians, registered nurses, exercise specialists, and social workers are available to assess your progress. Your physical routine is monitored for appropriate duration and intensity level of exercise, so you can feel more confident about exercising at home andreturn to the activities you love. The program is designed to help patients heal physically and emotionally through education, exercise therapy, and psychosocial support.

How could you participate in outpatient cardiac rehab?

To begin outpatient rehabilitation or to participate in Phase II or III you’ll need:

  • A physician referral.
  • An interview with a cardiac rehab team member.
  • A recent evaluation by your cardiologist or primary care provider.
