Angiograms

Angiograms help look for narrowing in blood vessels or blockages in heart arteries and show how blood circulates in blood vessels. It can be used to diagnose coronary and peripheral artery diseases, as well as blood clots and aneurysms. Under sedation, contrast material (dye) is injected and x-ray images on a screen show blood flow and blockages in your blood vessels.

Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that opens arteries (large blood vessels) to let blood flow more easily. It most commonly treats atherosclerosis (a collection of plaque made of fat and cholesterol) in your arteries. Angioplasty involves a tiny medical balloon that opens arteries that are too narrow or blocked.

  • Balloon angioplasty

Most angioplasty procedures involve a tiny medical balloon to move the plaque out of the way and off to the side of the artery wall.

  • Angioplasty with stenting

In most angioplasties,a permanent stent (a small metal mesh tube) is placed in the newly opened artery to help keep it open.

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) treats the narrowing of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle, that limits the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle due to plaque build-up. If angioplasty or stenting is not an option, the blocked or narrowed arteries can be bypassed with a section of a healthy blood vessel from elsewhere in your body.
