June is National Safety Month. It is also the most popular month for weddings. Touro for Women wants you to be healthy and safe throughout planning for your wedding and on the “big day.” Moms and mothers-in law to be, share these safety tips with your special bride. These are also good health and safety tips to remember and practice year round, not just for your wedding or in preparation for a special occasion.

Health & Safety Tips to Live By:

Eat Healthy

  • Improving your eating habits involves the 3 “R”s:
    • Reflect on your eating habits, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and what triggers unhealthy eating.
    • Replace unhealthy eating habits with healthy eating habits.
    • Reinforce your new healthy habits.
  • If you want to lose weight while you prepare for your wedding, eat smaller portions, lower the amount of fat in your diet, and avoid crash or fad diets.
  • Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables each day. Limit foods and drinks high in sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol.
  • Make healthy food choices for your wedding, showers, parties, and your new life together.

Be Active

  • Exercise for 2.5 hours each week. This is a very bust time. So, it is important to spread you activity out throughout the week and break it into smaller intervals.
  • Include cardio activities that raise your breathing and heart rate and weights that strengthen your muscles.

Be Smoke-Free

  • If you smoke, prepare for your new life by quitting smoking.
  • Keep your home smoke free
  • Choose a smoke-free venue for your reception

Manage Stress

  • Recognize and manage your stress while you juggle all of your wedding activities.
  • Signs of stress include headaches, insomnia, short temper, difficulty concentrating, and upset stomach. Pay attention to your body and what it is telling you.
  • Ask for and accept help!

Style with Care

  • Test any new beauty and cosmetic products way before your wedding to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction.
  • Always test new products on a small area. Follow all directions and warnings found on the labels. Stop using the product if any problems develop.
  • Never dye eyelashes or eyebrows as it may cause eye injury.
  • Always remove your makeup before you go to bed.

Prevent Injury

  • Wear comfortable and well-fitting clothes and shoes to prevent trips and falls.
  • If you are using candles at you wedding, make sure they are placed properly to avoid burning anyone or anything.
  • If your reception includes alcohol, make sure your guests leave with a designated driver. Offer alcohol-free beverages.

Get a Check-Up

  • Don’t forget about your health. If you have a health problem, make sure you manage it. Be sure to get any needed medication refills.
  • Check with your doctor to see what screenings and tests you need based on your age and health history.
  • Talk to your doctor about contraception, preconception care, sexually transmitted infections, your and your spouse’s family health history.
  • Call Touro’s Director of Women’s Services at 504-897-8959 if you need to find a physician to meet your special needs.

Get Enough Sleep

  • Get 7-9 hours of sleep each night!
  • More sleep each night will allow you to enjoy this special time.

Build a Healthy Relationship

  • Establish and maintain a healthy and respectful relationship before and during your marriage
  • A healthy marriage can lead to better health, increased wealth and financial stability, and a longer life.

Travel Safely

  • Make sure you have all needed vaccinations if you will be traveling out of the country.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Protect yourself from sunburn and insect bites
