Touro Announces First Annual Festival For Population With Limb Loss

The Touro Infirmary Foundation announces the inaugural AMPed Fest, a festival supporting the amputee population of New Orleans. The Touro Infirmary Foundation, in conjunction with ATLAS (Amputees Together Learning and Supporting), will host the event in April, during National Limb Loss Awareness Month.

AMPed Fest will be held on April 21st, 2018 in the parking lot behind Touro’s Outpatient Rehab Facility at 1525 St. Charles Avenue from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is free to the public.

The Festival will include live music, food, expositions from local prosthetic companies, community resources and health assessments. Musical guests include R&B soothsayer Phillip Manuel, jazz diva Anais St. John, Sydney Beaumont with the Beaumont Hughes Band, trad jazz trumpet player Doyle Cooper with the Red Hot Brass Band, and fellow trumpeter Terrell Batiste with his brand new eight-piece jazz project, ‘Dem Fellaz. LSU Physical Therapy students will create an obstacle course to mimic life with an amputation and prosthetic to help non-amputees experience day to day activities with the challenges a person with limb loss might face. Assessments will be available through LSU PT students and clinical information and paths to wellness will be presented by Touro Infirmary.

Funds raised from the festival will go to ALTAS, the Limb Loss Support group hosted at Touro Infirmary, which will sponsor children to attend Paddy Rossbach summer camp, a special camp designed for kids with limb loss as well as sending adults to the National Amputee Coalition Conference, a vital resource for communities and those with amputations.

AMPed Fest was started to raise awareness for the resources available to the community with limb loss and the community in which they live.
