Take control of your health: Rehab programs from our center
If you currently suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
asthma, or any other chronic lung disease, then Touro’s pulmonary
rehab program is for you. While lung disease can be frightening, there
are numerous things you can do to improve your situation and reduce the
risk of further complications. Our program focuses on information, confidence,
optimal function, and prevention. We teach you about your condition and
give you the confidence to make positive changes. Our program results
in faster progress than at-home rehab. And most importantly, it helps
prevent future heart problems as a result of lung disease..
Pulmonary rehabilitation programs help patients with chronic lung conditions
recover from their illnesses and breathe better. We have devised effective
programs designed to treat these conditions following medical procedures.
They include a regimented exercise program designed to increase endurance,
strength, and flexibility. We also provide thorough educational programs
to help patients understand their condition and teach self-management
techniques. We provide counseling services to handle the psychological
aspects and provide programs to help people quit smoking. The result is
a healthier and happier lifestyle.
Rehabilitation for healthier lungs and heart
Our goal is to use our pulmonary rehabilitation programs to help our patients
overcoming otherwise debilitating conditions. We do so by enacting a two-phase
approach. In the first, we educate you on better nutrition, exercise,
and lifestyle habits. Once this phase ends, we enter the maintenance period.
During this phase, our nurses and exercise specialists monitor your progress
while giving you the confidence you need to carry the lessons learned
in the first phase through the rest of your life. We’ve helped patients
from across New Orleans and the surrounding area make long-lasting positive changes.
Pulmonary rehab programs
Phase I pulmonary rehab
Inpatient program for patients where they engage in monitored low level
exercise and receive patient education.
Phase II pulmonary rehab
Over 12 weeks, our respiratory therapists and exercise specialists collaborate
to develop effective programs for each of our patients. Because each patient
is unique, with their own strengths and limitations, we individualize
the program. For example, older patients with arthritis will perform exercises
that don’t tax their joints. You’ll attend three sessions
a week, where we monitor your exercise for blood pressure, oxygen saturation,
and physical exertion levels. Our learning sessions include courses on
nutrition, stress management, smoking cessation, weight control, and behavior
modification.
Phase III pulmonary rehab
We want to ensure the lessons learned in Phase II stick. That’s why
Phase III is so essential. During these weeks, we continue to monitor
your vitals during your exercise program. But we also want to empower
you to take ownership of the progress you’ve made by offering encouragement.
We believe doing so gives our patients the tools they need to carry their
changes through the rest of their lives.
What is pulmonary rehab used to treat?
We utilize pulmonary rehabilitation to treat a vast array of conditions.
It is effective in combatting chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases like
emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Our program also addresses sarcoidosis
and cystic fibrosis. Patients who fully embrace the program have fewer
symptoms and complications, don’t visit the hospital as much, enjoy
a better daily life, and are more independent. To accomplish these goals,
patients work with a diverse team of medical professionals. They include
a pulmonologist, thoracic surgeon, physiatrist, internist, nurses, and more.
We focus on a broad range of issues during the program
The pulmonary rehabilitation program includes assistance with medications,
breathing exercises, stretching, weight training, exercise, education,
stress management and emotional support, and nutritional advice. The program’s
primary goal is to improve patient health and encourage recovery by teaching
patients the skills they need to secure a happier and healthier life for
themselves.
