Brain Injury Education & Support

At Touro, education and training are at the heart of our brain injury specialty program. We know that preparing patients, caregivers, and families for the road ahead is crucial, and that's why we have an interdisciplinary team of experts such as educations, support staff, and healthcare professionals, ready to guide you every step of the way.

Education Groups

Touro educational offerings include:

  • Role of Occupational
    • Feeding, grooming, dressing, pain management, etc.
  • Role of Physical Therapy
    • Car transfers, skin safety, wheelchair positioning, standing, walking, etc.
  • Role of Speech Therapy
    • Swallowing, communication, etc.

Support Group

Our Neuro Support Groups for patients and caregivers who have had a stroke or brain injury are held daily Monday-Friday in theM4 Day Space from 1-2 pm. There are 4-5 topics a week to help individuals be more independent with caring for themselves, improve self-advocacy, and increase knowledge of medical and social issues related to brain dysfunctions. It's free and open to the public as a resource and support system following a stroke or brain injury.

Peer Mentoring

Brain injury survivors have the opportunity to speak with others who have successfully reintegrated into the community following a brain injury. Brain Injury Association of Louisiana (BIALA) offers a virtual support group the first Wednesday of the month from 1-1:45 pm.

Recreation Baseball & Bowling League

Our Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury Survivors (BISCIS) league provides a valuable space for individuals with brain and spinal cord injuries to engage in athletic activities, which can have significant physical, emotional, and social benefits.

  • Baseball: Spring & Fall Seasons:
    • March - May (Spring)
    • September - November (Fall)
  • Bowling: June - August
