Organ transplants require an extraordinary life-saving team with skilled
expertise, specialized resources available for recovery, and a long-term,
comprehensive care plan that extends well beyond the operating room.
Transplant specialists and surgeons
The Tulane Transplant Institute at EJGH is led by a multidisciplinary team
of board-certified specialty physicians and surgeons with extensive training
in liver, pancreas, kidney, heart, and lung transplants. Working together,
our transplant experts take an active role in every facet of the transplant
program and our patients’ care.
Our advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is an integral part of the
transplant team. Specialized transplant APRNs facilitate care throughout
the inpatient transplant process by collaborating with your physicians,
surgeons, and other team members in all aspects of care from the time
you enter the hospital until discharge.
Transplant coordinators are highly trained, registered nurses with vast
experience in transplant care. You will be assigned a nurse coordinator
to organize your evaluation and monitor your time on the waiting list.
They are responsible for educating and coordinating your medical evaluation.
After transplantation, they continue to work with you and your physicians
to coordinate your long-term care.
Social workers
Our transplant social workers have experience, training, and understanding
of the financial, physical, and mental toll of an organ transplant. During
the evaluation process, you will be assigned a social worker who can assist
with resources and answer questions. Social workers provide pre-transplant
assessment, emotional support during the transplant process, post-transplant
guidance including prescription medication coverage options after your
transplant.
Medication and financial counseling
Patient assistance programs are available to help with the cost of prescription
medications after a transplant. Eligibility for assistance varies widely
based on each program, income criteria, and insurance status. Social workers
are available to answer questions about patient assistance programs and
guide you through the enrollment process.
The financial impact of organ transplantation causes anxiety and concern
for many patients and families. Because we understand the financial aspects
of organ transplantation, we have a specialized financial team to assist
you in understanding and navigating the cost associated with your care.
They collaborate and communicate with insurance companies, Medicare, and
Medicaid offices along with the clinical and social services transplant
team to provide a complete financial plan for each patient and work with
you throughout the transplant process
