Mohs Surgery
Benefits
Mohs surgery offers several important benefits. It has the highest cure rate for certain
types of skin cancer—up to 99%—and removes only the cancerous
tissue, preserving as much healthy skin as possible. Because the lab work
is done during the procedure, patients usually get same-day results. This
precision also leads to minimal scarring, making it a great option for
treating skin cancers in visible or sensitive areas like the face.
Procedure
The procedure works by removing thin layers of skin one at a time. After
each layer is taken, it's examined under a microscope to check for cancer
cells. If cancer is still present, the surgeon removes another layer.
This continues until all cancer cells are gone. Once the area is clear,
the wound is closed with stitches, left to heal on its own, or reconstructed,
depending on its size and location.
Recovery
Recovery from Mohs surgery is usually quick. Most patients return to normal
activities within a few days. Mild swelling, redness, or discomfort may
occur but are usually manageable. Your care team will give you clear instructions
for wound care and sun protection, and you may be asked to return for
a follow-up visit.
Is it right for you?
Mohs surgery might be appropriate for skin cancers that:
- Develop on areas where preserving cosmetic appearance and function are important
- Have recurred after previous treatment or are likely to recur
- Are located in scar tissue
- Are large or grow rapidly
