At Touro, supportive care is an essential part of our cancer program. We
provide the emotional, social, and practical support you need throughout
your cancer journey - from diagnosis to treatment and into survivorship.
Our whole-person approach goes beyond treating the disease to help you
strengthen your mind and body, cope with challenges, and focus on healing.
All supportive care services are offered at no cost to patients and their
families, because we believe no one should face cancer alone.
Remember the “four A’s” when developing a strategy to
effectively cope with cancer:
Be
aware of all your needs
Assess your ability to cope with cancer
Acknowledge when you need help
Accept the help that is offered to you
Supportive counseling for patients & loved ones
We offer supportive counseling or “talk therapy” to all patients
and their families who may be experiencing a difficult time coping with
the psychological and emotional impact of cancer and its treatment. This
psychotherapy is free and offered to individuals, couples, and families.
Our one-hour sessions are conducted by licensed professional counselors
and take place in a private setting where confidentiality is maintained.
Counseling may help you with the following:

Learning how to cope with your cancer
Understanding your psychosocial distress
Overcoming your depression and anxiety
Recognizing your thoughts and emotions
Expressing your feelings

Offering physical & spiritual support
Cancer and its treatment will change your body and can create or change
your spiritual needs. Bodily changes may include how your body looks,
feels, and performs, and all of those can impact your body image. While
some physical changes from cancer treatments are temporary, others are
permanent. Some people might not be affected much by physical changes,
while others will have a difficult time accepting even minor changes.
Touro is committed to helping you cope with any physical effects of cancer
treatment. We’re here to provide you with the information, resources,
and support you need. Spirituality is very important for the quality of
life of some people with cancer. Spiritual coping is used by many to help
them cope with their disease. It can provide a great source of strength,
hope, connection, and meaning.
Reducing stress and anxiety
Strengthening the will to live
Promoting a more positive frame of mind
Providing comfort during illness
