At East Jefferson General Hospital, we don’t just treat cancers, we
specialize in them. Our unique Rare Cancer program is powered by the latest and greatest
expertise, technology, treatments, and therapies to accurately diagnose
and fight uncommon cancers.
Though your cancer may be rare, it doesn’t mean you’re in this
alone. Our cancer care team—including board-certified oncologists,
surgeons, diagnostic imaging experts, and more—has extensive experience
caring for patients and the specific challenges that come with each unique
rare cancer diagnosis. They’re here to support you at every step
of your journey.
A cancer is considered rare when it occurs in fewer than 15 out of 100,000
people each year. Because less is known about these types of cancers,
they can be more challenging to diagnose and treat than more common cancers.
That’s why our program is staffed by experts with experience caring
for patients with the rarest cancer cases.
Your cancer may be unique, but so are you. Our team of experts customizes
your treatment plan to your specific needs. Treatment may involve one
of more of the following:
Advanced endoscopic therapy, including video capsule endoscopy, endoscopic
ultrasound, endoscopic tumor resection, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography
(ERCP), and endoscopic stent placement
Chemotherapy, including personalized medicine
Clinical trials
Immune therapy
Liver directed therapy, including embolization, chemoembolization, radioembolization,
and microwave ablation
Radiation therapy, including stereotactic body radiotherapy
Radioisotope therapy (PRRT)
Surgical intervention, including subspeciality trained physicians in gastrointestinal
(GI) surgical oncology, hepatobiliary oncology, urologic oncology, head
and neck oncology, and gynecologic oncology
